This antique locket is French, circa 1820. It has a classical shield shape and is decorated with Verre eglomise. The words Verre eglomise, translated from the French, means gilded glass. This process of gilding the underside of glass with gold or metal leaf utilizing a gelatin adhesive, regained popularity in the 18th century. It had been used as a technique for centuries, but an 18th century designer and art dealer named Jean-Baptise Glomy was responsible for its revival and popularity in France. This locket is classical in shape and design. The colors of forest green, blue and gold leaf are classical as well. The locket opens with a padlock on the bottom. The padlock opens independently of the key by gently putting pressure on one side to release it. The use of a locket with padlock and key was a popular motif. When the locket is opened ,one side has the gilded glass which was covered and protected with a pale blue gros-grain fabric. The fabric can be seen on the reverse. These lockets are very rare to find in its original form. Often, the pictures or decorations have been removed and only the bare crystals remain. Here it is intact and has the lock and key as well. It measures 2.5 inches long with the bale x 1 1/4 inches wide. It is completely original and has French touchmarks on the locket bale and padlock. It comes with a French velvet ribbon, but would also be beautiful on a gold chain, or pearls. It is gratifying to offer this for sale. Certainly, one of a kind and very beautiful, circa 1820. |
