Beautiful Georgian Paste Earrings Circa 1800

These wonderful earrings are Georgian, circa 1800. They are among the prettiest I have offered in quite a while. The finely faceted pastes are large and set in crimped rub over settings. The stones are foiled since they are set in closed backs. The process of placing foil behind the stone was devised to enhance the reflection of light. The foiling gives the stones a subtle hint of color, and in the night light they look light champagne diamonds. They pastes are black dot, which was used to simulate the culate of a diamond and found in the finest paste jewelry. The settings are vermeil, gold wash over silver.

The bottom paste measures a bold 12 mm. The top stone is 9 mm. Notice the bulbous back, typical of the early Georgian paste settings. The length from the top of the wire is 1 1/4 inches. The condition is excellent. Of note is the replacement of the ear wires and two tiny dings on the reverse of one earring. Finding original, early Georgian paste earrings is increasingly difficult, and these earrings are not only wearable day or evening, but a fine example from the Georgian period.
