This beautiful Victorian moonstone ring is circa 1900. Moonstones were considered a rare stone in antiquity, and in India it was sacred. Quite unusual in appearance, its beauty is unmatched to other gemstones. Its unique quality is created when the stone is clear and light refracts as it passes through the stone. The result is a beautiful sheen, or adularescence which moves across the stone as it moves. This moonstone, cut en cabachon is unusual in its scale, measuring a very large 1 inch long x 3/4 wide. The 18k gold work is very finely done with the stone hand set in a cut down claw mount. The ring has a large gallery that is all hand done with a series of S swirls, and a shank that is refined and simple. The ring measures a 6.5 US and can be sized. The condition is excellent with minor surface wear visible with a loop. It is beautiful, dramatic and completely original,English circa 1900. |
