These beautiful pale rose gold earrings are circa 1840. They are bold in appearance, but actually hollow in construction and light on the ear. The gold repousse work is refined, and the form architectural and sleek. The earrings are completely original including the top loops which are large, and very dramatic. They open and close with a hinge mechanism as seen in the photo. They measure a wearable 2 1/2 inches long x 6/8 across. The reverse as seen in photo #4, has a minor ding on one earring in the bottom of the central section. The other has on the back, an almost imperceptible ding as well. Both are not seen when worn. One earring has had an early repair to the top ring. The tiny openings at the bottom of both earrings are characteristic of early hollow jewelry and intentionally designed to release the air during the manufacturing process. The high carat rose gold patina is mellow and original. They are a wearable, elegant example of an 1840 pair of earrings. |
