Beautiful Georgian gold Maltese Cross, circa 1820. I have just returned from a buying trip to the UK and am pleased to offer this for sale. It has four translucent chalcedony sections accented with fine gold cannetille work. This very time intensive process requires a skilled hand as spirals of gold are twisted and connected to create the rosettes and leaves. The central section has a faceted ruby set in a crimped cut down collet and surrounded by natural pearls. There are three colors of gold and the patina is rich and original. The original bale is detailed and topped with a lovely flower motif.
I always seek this form as I love the symmetry and the effect of the smooth chalcedony contrasting with the fine texture of the gold work. Although the form of the cross is the same, they always differ as the gold work is done entirely by hand. It measures a bold 2 2/8 down, including the bail x 1 5/8 across. Simply beautiful on a ribbon worn close to the neck, on a long chain, or on a cord. Elegant in the 19th century and distinctive in the 21st.
