This is a very lovely diamond butterfly brooch, circa 1900. It has wings of rose diamonds and a body set with natural split pearls. The diamonds are well cut with many facets and have beautiful fire and light. The eyes are cabachon garnets.
The turn of the 20th century witnessed a revival of interest in naturalistic forms, and butterflies, bees and other insects were quite popular. This butterfly is realistic and well designed in proportion and grace. It measures 1 3/4 inches across the wing span x 1 inch long, and is is completely original including the fittings. The pin stem has a screw mechanism which was commonly used at this time as brooches could have several attachments to be joined with a larger more elaborate brooch, or for hat ornaments. Splendid when worn on a jacket, sweater, joined with a strand of pearls, or alone for singular impact. Beauty, circa 1900.
