The word rare is appropriately used in this description. This antique mid 19th century brooch is Scottish. As I have described in other pieces, a figural brooch is rare in Scottish agate jewelry as most were traditional in form. This butterfly is folk art at its best, and the finest I have sold. It is large, measuring 3 1/8 inches across the wing span X 2 inches down. It has a beautiful choice of agate colors that blend seamlessly one to the other. The wings are the most distinct feature as the lapidary created a sense of movement by faceting the wings in a rippling pattern. This form of antique jewelry has been a passion of mine and I can honestly say this brooch is museum worthy. It is completely original and in excellent condition. Splendid and rare, circa 1860. |
