This is an antique Scottish agate brooch, circa 1880. Its form is beautiful in its simplicity and the agates well chosen for color and striation. It is a complex brooch to create and it is labor intensive. Each agate has a "foil" or opposing agate and a woven pattern is created ,subtle and beautiful. The pin has a remarkably contemporary feel as it is unencumbered by silver or engraving. This restraint created its unique beauty. All the agates are in perfect condition. The line seen on one agate is a natural striation ,not a damage or crack. It measures 2 3/8 inches across x 1 3/8 down. It is completely original and in excellent condition. Simple,elegant and unique. Circa 1860. |
