French Art Nouveau sterling moonstone ring, circa 1900. I will begin by saying that the quality of this stone is exceptional and certainly gem quality. It has a large cabachon cut which gives the moonstone its magical adularescence, or sheen. It is large, measuring 3/4 inches long x 5/8 across and has a distinctive teardrop shape. The clear, blue moonstone is void of any inclusions. Finding early moonstone jewelry has received heightened interest as the mines for quality blue stones are almost depleted. Once plentiful, stones found today of this quality are commanding high prices. The term used today is "rainbow moonstone", and it is not the description of early, blue, quality stones. The setting is silver and is completely hand made. The shoulders are designed as intertwined snakes which flow into the shank and also join the prongs. The silver work is finely executed and smooth and the shank bears the French touchmark for silver. It is a size 7 US. It is in excellent condition and exceptionally fine. French, circa 1900. |
