This is a dramatic 18th century almandine garnet and natural pearl cross. This very beautiful cross has Scottish Tay pearls and faceted garnets. The garnets have a rich hue, are flat cut and finely faceted around the perimeter. They are each foiled back to reflect light and are hand set in rub over collets. The pearls are also set in fine rub over settings and have the beautiful variation of color so distinctive of pearls found in the Tay river.
The cross is set in silver, hand chased and gilded. The rich gold gilding is original and in excellent condition. The reverse reveals the original loops used to secure a ribbon. It measures a dramatic 3 1/4 inches long X 1 5/8 across the widest span. It is completely original and in excellent condition. This is an 18th century treasure.
