Antique French Gold Poissarde Earrings Circa 1810

These dramatic French 18k earrings are set with vibrant blue faceted paste stones that are foiled back and set in hand crimped rub over collets. The stones have a very beautiful rich, deep blue color. This form of earring is termed poissarde, and was popular in France, Germany and Italy. In the book Georgian Jewellery, by Dawes and Collings, pg.33 it is stated...These were hoop earrings with a back to front fitting that resembled a fish hook. The form were so called because they were first worn by fishwives selling their wares in Les Halles market in Paris(c.1795). This example, has very fine gold work. The natural white seed pearls contrast with the blue stones and are also set with finely detailed collets. They measure 1 1//4 inches long x 1/4 inches wide x a dramatic 7/8 inches deep. It is completely original and in excellent condition. They bear French control marks for gold on the ear wires. Light on the ears, rare and wonderful, circa 1810.
