Simply beautiful, almandine garnet cross, set in 15k gold. Rare to find these wonderful early crosses, and rarer still to find them with a pansy motif. The pansy is symbolic for love and remembrance and in this cross they are set in the center and on all corners, gently curved to face one another. The gold work is superior as each garnet is set in hand crimped collets and foiled behind the stone. This foiling was done to enhance the reflection of light since stones at this time were closed in the back. The almandine garnets are flat cut and finely faceted around the edges. They have that beautiful, rich distinctive hue created by the technique of foiling. The cross measures a very bold, 2 1/2 inches long x 2 1/8 inches across. It has very fine gold work, smooth to the touch evident on the back as well. This is quite extraordinary and beautiful worn on a long black or on a ribbon, or chain at the neck. English, circa 1800. |
