Antique Georgian Garnet Gold Earrings Circa 1820
These Georgian garnet earrings are circa 1820. They are designed as pansies, set in foiled back almandine garnets. The garnets are characteristically flat cut, with fine facets around the perimeter, and set in hand crimped collets. The use of foil beneath a stone was used to enhance the light, as early jewelry had stones closed in the back. This technique created the very lovely, distinctive hue that varies with every turn of the head.

The pansy, in the language of flowers symbolizes remembrance and loving thoughts. It was often given as a token of love having the hidden meaning of "remember me" or "thinking of you" after the French word pensee. In this example, the pansy is larger than most, measuring 3/4 inches. The total length with the gold wire is 1 inch. The gold backs are just as beautifully executed as the front with delicate curves embracing the garnets. The condition is excellent. The gold wires are replacements and very well done to match the rose gold patina. The size is perfect for day or evening. Quite lovely to use these earrings with any Georgian garnet jewelry, or simply by themselves. Splendid and elegant, circa 1820 England. For examples of this form of earrings, see Ginny Dawes book, Georgian Jewellery .
