These earrings are from the Aesthetic Movement, popularized in England during the mid 19th century. During this period, jewelry reflected the influence of the art and design of Japan. The asymmetrical designs, often rendered in mixed metal, embellished with naturalistic themes, was an offshoot of the fine Japanese art of shakudo. These sterling earrings are well proportioned and finely engraved. The birds have a gold wash with just a hint of color. The three interlocking circles are like frames around a painting, also typical of this period of design and are more commonly found on lockets and bangles. They measure 1 1/4 inches long from the top of the wire. The round drop measures 9/10 inches. They are beautiful, completely original, and in excellent condition. England, circa 1870 |
