Excellent 10" x 14" pen and ink on paper, titled "Le Pont Royal", depicting the landmark Parisian bridge with fisherman along the bank, barge, and Pavillion de Flore on the opposite bank. Titled and dated '09 lower left, signed by Childe Hassam (1859-1935) in pencil lower right.
This piece is in good condition; the paper is nice and intact, but had fallen in its frame long ago, so as to unevenly tone the paper, which can be seen in the images. That's the worst of it - no tears, no foxing, no creases. You can easily see the pencil underneath, and in fact, there's another pencil sketch on the reverse of what looks to be a dock in Gloucester. This is from the estate of Alfred Owen Aldridge, a renowned author and specialist in the field of American Colonial history and Eastern/Western comparative literature. He was affiliated with the University of Illinois throughout his career; had a house here (where he lived most of his life), and in New York. I am also offering several other works from his estate - among them, the Foujita litho, the Regency library chair, and the Emile Lambinet oil. This is one of the few American works he had in his collection; His records show that he purchased it at Tepper Galleries in New York in 1979. This piece is fresh from his estate and has not, to my knowledge, passed before the Hassam committee, but I offer a lifetime money back guarantee of authenticity, and 10 day money back guarantee as to condition. |
