| Charming clown doll, made circa 1940 by listed IL artist Louise Woodroofe (1892-1996). Ms. Woodroofe, an art professor at the University of Illinois, traveled with the Ringling Bros. circus during summers in the 1930's, and has become well known for her depictions of circus life. She was primarily a painter, but occasionally created figural dolls, such as this one. Woodroofe sold and exhibited very little work during her lifetime; and novelty items such as these were either given to friends, or scattered to the wind as anonymous works at her estate sale. This doll comes from the Champaign, IL estate of Anita Crawford, who was a friend of Woodroofe's, and was given the doll by Woodroofe as a gift. It bears no signature, but will be sold with a letter from Thornton Collections documenting this provenance. The doll measures apprx. 10" tall and 8" wide, and is constructed of wire and cloth, with a painted face. It is in excellent condition, with some fading to the cloth of the neck ruffle. | ||
