I am offering for sale this wonderful antique Japanese Meiji period carved ivory parasol handle dating to around 1890. Of an unusually large size and featuring a beautifully carved scene of a woman with two children with irises at their feet and a mountainous landscape above their heads. Signed in red both within the scene and also in an oval cartouche amongst the dragons. The reverse of the handle is covered in finely carved dragons with inset mother of pearl eyes. One signature reads Kogyoku but I couldn't decipher the other. Dating from late Meiji period and measuring an impressive 35.5cm long by 3cm at the widest part and 1.5cm deep. It is an oval shape tapering to a round shaft. This lovely parasol handle is in very good condition with one mark above the woman's head which I don't think is actually a hairline (and which looks darker in the pictures than in real life) and a couple of very minor scuff marks near the shaft. A wonderful, display ready piece.
