Antique Pottier & Stymus Attr. Sofa Chairs Rosewood
Fine 19th Century antique rosewood sofa/couch, matching armchair and two side chairs attributed to Pottier & Stymus feature outstanding hallmark detailed excellence in construction, style, single piece curved legs, custom back pads and lush silk upholstery. These pieces do not have a signature or hallmark. Pottier & Stymus was one of the top American cabinetmaking firms in the last third of the 19th century. Examples can be found in Museums such as the Smithsonian and Brooklyn Museums. August Pottier was born in Coulommiers, France in 1823 and became an apprentice to a wood sculptor in Paris. He immigrated to New York in 1847, and later formed a partnership with the famous Gustave Herter in 1851 that was dissolved soon after it began. Pottier & Stymus supplied furniture to the President's office and the Cabinet Room in the White House in 1869. Circa 1860s. Dimensions: sofa: 44 high X 72 wide X 32 deep. Armchair: 43.5 high X 27 wide X 27 deep. Side chairs: 41 high X 22 wide X 20 deep.
