|“Bold Form” marble sculpture, attributed to Barbara Hepworth (1903 - 1975) (signature unavailable) Dimensions: 11" X 6" X 5" (including stand). Rare strong expression of Hepworth’s iconic form is even more rare as it is a one of kind done in marble. Barbara Hepworth was one of the most prominent early 20th-Century British sculptors who moved from Classical to abstract styles that were organic and geometric. Many of her works are relatively small scale, but in her later years, she did increasingly larger pieces including Meridian for the State House in London, and the Hammerskjöld Memorial for the United Nations Building in New York City. Helpworth Studied under a scholarship at the Royal College of Art in London, and graduated in 1924. She then went to Italy where she worked with master stone carvers in Rome. Strong demand for similar Hepworth works in terms of style, material, simplicity, vision, interpretation, feel and size (this comp. is larger at 18”) include the sale price of $188,500 for “Standing Figure” Lot # 8 at Christie’s New York on November 5th, 2008. Provenance: Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles California.|
