|"Oil on canvas “Bavarian Alps” signed dated and titled bas droite: W. Keith (1838 - 1911) 1888. Dimensions: approximately 23.5” X 17” (without frame). Please note the original cast iron period corner stretcher fasteners marked "Pat pend 1883" (see close up photo). This striking painting is a classic demonstration of Keith’s Master genius and trend later in his career towards a looser, darker, evocative vision of Nature’s wisdom beauty and mystery. While most of Keith’s subjects were California landscapes, this piece is a more rare finished piece from a plein air study done in the Bavarian Alps near Garmisch-Partenkirchen during his two stay in Munich. Born in Scotland Keith traveled throughout America and Europe, living most of his life in San Francisco. William Keith know as “the Dean of California painters” created a pioneering romanticized style of Nature he developed from the Dusselforf, Barbizon and Tonalism Schools. Many of his works were lost in his studio in the fire of 1906. Strong demand for Keith works have commanded prices over $190,000. Similar comparable pieces in terms of quality, color, style, mood, execution, subject, size and medium to this painting include the publicly recorded sale price of $128,250 for “High Sierra Canyon” Lot # 110 at Bonhams and Butterfields in San Francisco on December 11, 2006.
