|“Lagon au Crépuscule“ (Lagoon at Dusk) oil on canvas, signed and dated 1857 by Charles Daubigny (1817 – 1878) bas droite. Dimensions: 15.5” X 24” (27.5” X 35.5” outside frame). This rare night painting captures the Nature’s twilight feel is a striking example of Daubigny’s vision and talent reveals his famous casual rough “unfinished” style that in part marks the beginning transition from Barbizon to what will become Impressionism. Daubigny learned painting from his father, then studied with the Sentie and Delaroche before moving to Barbizon to paint Plein Air. He won Salon Medals and the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. His work had greatly influenced such impressionists as Cézanne , Monet, and Pissarro. Strong demand for similar works in terms of execution, medium, size, feel, and style include the sale price of $79,770 for Lot 66 “Les pommiers en fleur” sold at Christie’s London King St. on November 21st, 2011.
