Oil Painting Frank Henry Shapleigh 1842 – 1906 19th C.
“Saco River, North Conway, New Hampshire” oil on canvas, signed lower left – F. H. Shapleigh. Circa 1890. Dimensions: 20.25” X 36” (27.25” X 43.5” with frame). This beautiful work demonstrates Shapleigh’s special ability to convey the sublime feeling of Nature’s expression in his favorite New Hampshire. Frank Shapleigh, born in Boston and studied at the Lowell Institute of Drawing. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, he continued his studies in Paris under Ernile Lambinet. Best know for his evocative landscapes of the White Mountains area in New Hampshire, Shapleigh also painted in Florida, California and Europe. His work is represented in Farnsworth Art Museum, ME; New Britain Museum of Art, CT; Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College; Portland Museum of Art, ME; among other museums. Strong demand for Shapleigh’s works have fetched as much as $160,000 for one painting as well as the following publicly recorded sales of paintings similar in quality, subject, medium, complexity, execution, style and size as the sale for $10,070 for the smaller (20” X 30”) ($16.78/square inch) “Mt. Chocorua from Tamworth, N.H.” Lot # 141 at Skinner on May 16th, 2008 and the sale for $9,400 for the much smaller (10” X 16”) ($58.75) “Mt. Washington and Ellis River, Jackson, New Hampshire” Lot # 389 at Skinner on September 7, 2007. These appropriate comparable sale prices per square inch from $16.78/sq. inch - $58.75/sq. inch create a comparable price range for this large fine painting of $12,232 to $42,829.
