Fine handsome early 1800s English mahogany longcase clock in the George III style, in prime original condition. The eight-day two-train movement has anchor escapement and rack strike on bell with a subsidiary seconds dial and a 31 day calendar feature. The classic silvered 12” arched brass dial has Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic quarter minute and subsidiary seconds dial, signed by the maker, “Carter,(of) Salisbury”. The arch features an eagle bearing “Tempus Fugit” ribbon over decorative garlands. The 8 foot (144cm) tall beautiful mahogany case includes a striking crafted hood with brass capitals on the columns, surmounted by a swan neck pediment with three brass ball and spire finials. Made circa 1830s – 1840s. The maker, William Carter of Salisbury, England, highly in demand and supremely respected for his excellence was a well known, Master Clockmaker of the early 19th Century. Strong demand for fine 19th Century longcase Carter clocks is demonstrated by the sale price of similar yet newer less rare longcase clocks made by William Carter including the $6,391 much newer Carter clock (Ref #: DNLC) at Calton Clocks (ukclocks.com) and the $6,153 Carter clock at Wiltshireclocks.com. Own this fine piece of working history and culture at a great value.
