An intricately painted Mayan copador Bowl. The exterior has a lower band of two prone figures thought to represent the Hero Twins "Hunahpu" and "Xbalanque" on their journey through Xibalba, the Maya Underworld. The interior displays three zoomorphic bird figures. The piece is professionally repaired from a clean break with some inpainting. 9" in diameter. A large and attractive Vera Cruz terracotta head, being life size and most probably a burial effigy. The face is very finely crafted, with handsome features. The eyes are narrowed and mouth opened to reveal the teeth. The figure wears a nose plug and a head dress with lobed decoration at the forehead. A few repairs are noted to the sides of the head dress and on the backside, but only one small area of restoration is found, being on the left edge of the face, just below the head band. An impressive and large piece, mounted on a custom removable wooden base. Height is 9 1/4", just over 13" with the base. Dates to Ca. 300-900 A.D.-Ex. New England private collection.

Seen here is a stone head from the Classic Mayan period, showing a warrior wearing the flayed skin of an enemy as a mask. The face and sometimes entire upper body were occasionally worn in ceremonial fashion. Note the wearer's eyes under the more large eye openings, and the wearer's lips inside the mask's mouth. Provenance- Ex. Leslie Borenstein from the mid-1960's. 2" x 1 3/4".

Ca. 200-400 A.D., Teotihuacan, Mexico Valley. From the collection of Otto Von Winning,1914-2001. Von Winning was a distinguished scholar of Pre-Columbian civilizations notably West Mexican cultures. Probably best known for his corpus entitled Pre-Columbian Art of Mexico and Central America. He referred to these items in his journal as "objects held in the hand", more precisely held by the shaman during rituals. This piece is ceramic and displays a row of blood drops above a symbolic eye. It is 2 1/4" high by 1 3/8" wide with a chip at the very top of the piece, else intact.

Ca. 900-600 B.C., Middle Pre-Classsic Era, Vera Cruz Mexico. Beautiful mottled greenstone burial figure, otherwise referred to as an "axe man". With flared nostrils, down-turned mouth and menacing eyes, arms folded across the chest with fingers meeting at the midline. 3" tall and intact with minor chipping to the front of the left ear as seen in photos. There are faint signs of some toolwork which may indicate enhancement of the piece in modern times and the piece is priced accordingly.
