Antique Painting Hakutaku, Ba Z, Edo, 19th C

A Chinese imaginary beast Hakutaku (in Chinese: Ba Z). Circa 19th Century. Painted on silk with ink. It has been said the creature understands human languages as well as the universe. Like the other fantastic beasts such as a kylin and a phoenix, Hakutaku are also believed to have appeared during the reign of governors of virtue. Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as a talisman to protect one against the evil. It has been said if one encountered the beast, the family would enjoy prosperity of posterity. There are some insect damages and light marks on the painting due to its great age.
