Antique Japanese Painting Tenjin by Tosa
The painting features a Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) or Tenjin, who became a deified spirit after his death. Tenjin worship in Japan has originally been derived from the worship for Amatsu-kami (heavenly God) in shintoism and somehow connected to the worship for Sugawarano Michizane of God of thunder. Later during Edo period, he became also worshipped as the God of study since he had been known for prominent scholar and poet. Painted on paper with ink and pigments. There is an inscription on the scroll reads "Tosa Shokan" suggesting the artist was Tosa Yukihiro. It is painted in the style of Tosa Yukihiro. Tosa Yukihiro (1893-1958) was active during early Muromachi period. He was a court painter. According to a historical record, Yukihiro first introduced himself as as Tosa, which led the establishment of Tosa scholl through the history.

There are some loss, damages and creases on the painting as well as some marks damage on the mounting due to its great age.
