Antique Japanese Buddhist Painting Black Fudo Myo-O

Unusual piece depicted Black Fudo Myo-o. Executed with ink and pigments on paper. Fudō Myō-ō is the central deity in all Myō-ō groupings. Fudō is a personification of Dainichi Nyorai, and the best known of the Myō-ō, who are venerated especially by the Shingon sect of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. Here depicted is a Black Fudo. Black Fudo Myo-O deified as a god of earth and teaches the greatest difficulty can be overcome by perseverance. This religious faith was related to mountain asceticism-shamanism and spread among people. Black Fudo-Myo-O is not common in Japan. It seems to be originated from Tibetan Buddhism.

The piece is in fine condition with insignificant fine marks present. The scroll is also in good condition with tiny marks visible. It is accompanied by a paulownia wood storage box with inscription authenticating the painting.

Painting: 15 5/8 x 42 1/8 (39.6cm x 106.9cm)
Scroll: 20 x 74 1/8 (50.6cm x 188.0cm)
