Leather pouch with brass ornaments in front and back. Brass chain and knob, steel striker. These match strikers were important implements used in lighting fires in temples and in religious rituals. The chain indicates the wearer attached the pouch to their belts for easy access. Sign of wear but very good condition. 3" x 1 3/4" (w/o chain), chain measures 4". Circa 19th century.

Leather pouch with brass/bronze ornamentation in front with a Buddhist symbol. These match strikers were important implements for use in temples and religious rituals. The brass ring indicates this was carried on a strap to attach to the wearer's belt. In pretty good condition, a slight separation of the leather at the back where the ring is attached but no danger of unravelling. Measures 3 1/2" x 2", 19th century.

Beautiful hand carved tray with blossoms and leaves in the technique known as kamakura-bori. The carved wood is decorated with layers of black and red lacquer, rubbed and polished to get the desired effect. Inscribed on back. Highly sought after since the beginning of the Meiji period. Wonderful condition and unusual for having enclosed sides. Measures 8 1/2"x11", early 20th century.

Elegant lacquer carving of flora in the technique known as kamakura-bori. The carved wood is decorated with layers of red and black lacquer, polished and rubbed for the desired effect. Inscribed and signed at the back. Very desirable and popular since the beginning of the Meiji period. Early 20th century, measures 7 1/2" diameter.  A tiny, tiny blemish near the rim which is reflected in the price, otherwise in very good condition.

Hand loomed cotton sakiori with very pleasing jewel and neutral tones on a black warp. 'Saki' meaning 'to shred', and 'ori' meaning 'to weave', sakiori were often woven from worn fabric and kimonos cut into loom ready scraps with a warp of cotton or hemp. These textiles are wonderful examples of artful recycling. Taisho period, c. 1920-30. Measures 5.5 inches wide by 100 inches long.
