Admiral Heihachiro Togo bronze statue signed Keiji

A portrait bust of a famous Japanese naval hero, this bronze will be of significant interest to the collectors of works of art associated with crucial moments of a nation's history. It shows Admiral Heihachiro Togo in full dress uniform, collar chain, breast stars, neck badge and medals. Inscribed on the front:Togo Gensai and on the back:Keiji. Admiral Togo(1847-1934), born into a Samurai family in Kagoshima, he was a great admirer of the British naval tradition and although his birth place had been bombarded by the British in 1863, he chose to study with the British Navy during 1871-78. It was the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 which brought him to the stellar position which he occupies in Japanese Naval history. His resounding victory over the Russians at Tsushima when Russia's Baltic fleet of 49 vessels were destroyed, effectively ended the Tsar's aspirations in the Far East.Togo's famous "Z" Flag signal before the engagement was full of Nelsonian resonance "On this battle rests the fate of the Empire, let everyman do his utmost."Appropriate for such an Anglophile, a lock of Nelson's hair , given by the National Maritime Museum in 1981, rests with a similar lock of Togo's hair at the Japanese Naval Academy at Etajima. See "Meiji Revisited" by Dallas Finn. The size of the bronze: 8in. (19cm) high X 7in.(17.5cm) at widest point. Condition: very good, no restoration, no breaks.
