| A very fine and unusual portrait of Nadir Shah, the founder of the Afshar dynasty of Persia ; gouache on paper, highlights of gold, showing the young Shah in profile and seated on a platform. He is wearing a sable stole and his distinctive feathered hat, and with a sword resting on his lap.Nadir Shah invaded Northern India, sacked Delhi and removed vast amounts of the Mughal Emperor's treasures, including the Peacock Throne ( which is still in Iran) and the famous Koh-e-Noor diamond. There are other portraits of Nadir, showing him as a mature ruler, but this is unusual in depicting him as a young man and having been painted by an Indian artist. It is a very detailed and a fine example of Delhi School of work, exhibiting the traditional virtuosity of the miniaturist. Age: late 18th century. size: 23.5 X 15.5 cm framed. Condition: very good, no tears, no restoration. | |||||||
