Anglo Indian Monghyr ebony box ivory inlaid
An Anglo-Indian sewing box of ebony inlaid with ivory from Monghyr region. The hinged cover with its velvet padded interior, lifts to reveal two compartments: the upper compartment has 13 sections four with their ornately inlaid lids, the lower compartment is a vacant chamber. The inlay work is a delicate execution of scrolling flowering plants which are in good condition.The box stands on four round feet and has carved facetted handles. For further examples of Monghyr woodwork see Amin Jaffer "Furniture from British india and Ceylon" 2001. pp. 235-237. We can obtain CITES EXPORT Licence. Age: C. 1840-50. size: 30.5 X 19.9 X 13.7 cm. condition: very good, only slight age fissure to the cover as seen in the images.
