| This is a deeply modeled lidded vessel with a squatting deity figure suggestive of Tlaloc, with a distinctive fanged mouth and large rimmed eyes, the head jutting forward and hands on the sharply bent legs, wearing a heavy collar, his whole body encircled by a fan of black-tipped plumes, the rattle lid surmounted by a spotted creature with arched back forming the handle; in highly fired orangeware. Height including lid: 9 1/2 inches. This pot was vetted in Dec., 1972 by Dr. Gordon Eckholm, Curator of Mesoamerican Art at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC.
