This censor was cast during the early pary of the Ch¡¯ien Lung Period (1736 ¨C 1796 ) , Qing Dynasty.
At the bottom left side (pictured) the censor is signed and dated.
The Chinese characters at the side:乾隆四年十月吉日 造
translates " it is made in one traditional ( auspicious) good day of October in 1740.
The approximate age is 2011-1740=271
This censor is in excellent condition, including the feet. Only cleaned and a light coat of bees wax applied.
The censor is decorated in the round with Pomegranate ( punica granatum), and peony (paeonia suffruticosa).
The pomegranate with its excess of 600 seed has become a symbol of fertility and numerous progeny.
Esteemed as one of the most exquisite flowers the peony is a symbol for nobility and value. A symbol of spring, it is also used as a metaphor for female beauty and reproduction. Pictured in full bloom, the peony symbolizes peace.
