Circa late 19th/early 20th century Black lacquer over elmwood
This Chinese apothecary chest has a total of 26 drawers. Twenty-four of these are divided into 4 separate compartments while the two at bottom are each divided into 2 compartments.
For this type chest, at the front of each drawer are 4 separate red paper tags, each with the content of the compartment it represents identified in Chinese characters. When/if the content on one of the sections is changed; the red tag representing the content for that compartment is replaced by affixing a new tag atop with the old one identifying the new content.
The tags are read counter clockwise beginning with the tag located at the left hand side identifying content of the 4th and last compartment of the drawer, the t\tag at top the 3rd compartments, the tag at left the 2nd compartment and the tag at bottom the first compartment at the front of the drawer.
