The Chalice was cast with the date in Burmese script ( see photo).
The date reads Buddhist Era Year 2184 which equates to Christian Era/Gregorian Calendar Year 1634
This heavy chalice was used to dip and pour water over the head of a stone or marble Buddha Image to bathe and cool. This is considered as an act of kindness and done in order to gain spiritual merit. Theory is that the heavier the container, the more effort is required and there more merit gained.
The custom is to pour one container of water for each year of age of the devotee performing the ceremony.
This Chalice shows great patina and wear of use.
Please note the natural wear at the handle. The image on the handle is a Burmese angel or Kinnera.
