We obtained this series of Cultural Revolution Mao’s Red Book during a buying trip in NanKing, a city in Central Eastern China. On the front page of this red book, in stamp it states the following: “Wish Chairman Mao Live to be thousands of years old. Sailing in the Great Sea relies on a helmsman, To Comrade Qiou Ding Fei. NanKing No. 2 Pharmaceutical Company. On the back of the red book, it states the following: “Red Chairman Mao’s Book, Listen to Mao’s Words, Follow Chairman Mao’s Direction to do things”. Signed “Lin Biao”. Note that Lin Biao’s name was crossed out by the original owner of this red book. This signifies the change in the political climate, where Lin Biao had fallen out of favor of Mao and eventually declared a traitor. This red book was edited by the People’s Liberation Army Main Political Department, Distributed by XinHua Bookstore, and Printed by HuiNan Publishing Company in November 1968. This Red Book was priced at 40 Chinese cents at the time. Interesting thing about this red book is that the fact that Lin Biao’s name was crossed out by the original owner of this red book, signifying the change in the political climate, where Lin Biao had fallen out of favor of Mao and eventually declared a traitor.
