| This bronze Taoist statue is often referred by people in China as “Lao Zi”, the father of Taoism. This Taoist immortal statue features Lao Zi sitting on a lion, with his hands in the pose of Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation. His legs crossed in the Padmasana, also known as vajrasana or dhyana asana, the well-known lotus position. When Buddhism came to China, in order for people of China to recognize and accept Buddhism, the interpretation of Buddhist philosophy often intermixed with Taoism. Thus it is common to see in the future representation of Taoist statues that Buddhist symbol is evident in the portrayal of Taoism. In this particular example, the Taoist is wearing a crown that has a carving of a meditating Buddha in the center. There has also been an interpretation of this statue to be a version of Buddhist Bodhisattvas, Manjusri. This statue is measured 11.5” by 5” by 15” and weighs 15 pounds. | ||
