Zhao Tian Qi printwork 5 - "All people are Soldiers"
Zhao Tianqi graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Chinese Central Fine Art Academy in Beijing in 1992. Since then she has regular one-woman shows and group exhibitions - mostly in Beijing, but also in Hong Kong and in Japan. Zhao Tianqi has found an enthusiastic group of collectors among the Western diplomats in Beijing, and was an insiders's tip among expatriates in Beijing. Now Zhao Tianqi is on the best way to become a well-known artist in and outside of China. Her prints are in the possession of the Dutch, Swiss and the German embassies in the capital Beijing. Articles have been written about her work in China and aboard. Loosely classified as part of the Chinese Avant Garde movement that originated from the late 1980s, Zhao Tianqis works in silkscreen technique and in a rather rare form of printmaking, so-called single prints. With this technique, the complete design is applied on a stone or glass plate using either watery or oil colors. Then a paper is laid over the design and pressed firmly against the plate. And that is it. Thus only one copy of a design can be created. A special technique of modern Chinese woodblock printmaking deserves to be mentioned - reduction woodblock printing. It is a method of printing all colors from only one woodblock by recarving it after each color was printed. During the process, the images already printed are destroyed by the recarving. At the end, the block is reduced to the image of the last color and it is impossible to make new impressions after the first edition. The art buyer's investment is protected. Signed and dated by the artist. Titled "All People are Soldiers". Wood block print and silk screen. Made in China series, 2004. 30 x 21.
