Judging by the calendar date on the poster, this advertisement for the Great Britain and American cigarette company was done between 1915 and 1916, the glamour of the Shanghai Bund had yet to arrive, but the brands of cigarettes (Pirate, Pinhead, Peacock, Atlas, The Castles), symbol of the West had already invaded the post Qing dynasty of China. The cigarette girl dressed in traditional clothing, self consciously hiding her bound feet, showed the residue of the Manchurian Qing dynasty. Her eyes, looking longingly into the future, signified the new generation that was to come. Size: 31.5" long by 20.5" wide.
