A fascinating photo album C. 1920 by Lieutenant C.P. McDonald, of the Royal Flying Corps. The album has a calling card enclosed with gentleman's name and rank. The photos were probably taken by him, or friends, during a visit to Japan shortly after WW1 The album shows images of various scenes of Japan and the people he encountered. There are 37 snapshots and three more commercial photos. Some of the snapshots are of incidental Japanese scenery, some are of British men and women ( very likely on diplomatic postings), and some are of Japanese country people, weaving, washing, farming, and pulling rickshaws. Two of the pictures are of particular interest as they are of a submarine, The UB143. This boat was originally in the German navy, and launched in 1918 and then surrendered in Dec. 1918. It then served in the Japanese navy from 1920- 1921. The album has a cloth cover with printed scenes of Japanese men. Quite a fascinating bit of history of that time. Condition: Some photos appear missing in the book, and some are a bit faded with time but have been shot with a good camera and are still quite clear. Size: Book- 12 1/2 X 9 1/2 inches. Snapshots- 5 1/2 X 3 1/4 inches approx. |
