This is a wonderful bronze Art Nouveau belt buckle in the design of two standing cranes with delicate beaks and posing feet. The birds are flanking slender bullrushes with opalescent glass tops. Each of the cranes has an inset red glass, or garnet, eye. Buckle fittings on the back as shown in the picture. The workmanship of this exceptional piece is in the style of Lucien Gaillard, 1861-1933. The artists work, in keeping with avant garde jewelry of the time, often placed the focus on the overall artistry of the work rather than precious stones. There are some indistinct marks on the reverse side that may be casting marks, but in a certain light appear to be a signature. Regardless, the quality of the piece speaks for itself. Condition: Very good. Size: 3 ¾ X 2 ¾ inches. |
