An intricately carved ivory parasol handle depicting scenes of the Alaskan Gold Rush. I would assume this elaborately carved piece was done by a carver working in the gold fields of Alaska. The workmanship is so detailed, that it is difficult to list all the scenes as they blend into each other around the circumference of the handle. Some of the scenes are a native totem pole, a musher with his sled and dogs, a log cabin, miner's panning for gold by a stream, and a small ship with flags. The handle looks like a carved panorama of the scenery and activity of the gold rush. The end is silver tipped with the initials GJMC. A wonderful piece of history. Condition: Age split on the knob, and some minor age cracks. Carving is clear. Length: 11 ¼ inches. |
