Circa 1940s to early 50s
In the several years that I have been collecting vintage Peruvian silver, this brooch is one of the most interesting and well constructed that I have come across {aside from my Graziella Laffi pieces!}. With an undulating rectangular form, and deeply convex center that imbues it with superb depth and dimensionality, the brooch boasts three Inca glyphic figurals applied to an intricately chased, grid-like background. The figures depict a crouching tiger {perhaps the Warracaba Tiger, said to live in Peru), flanked by two anthropomorphic crocodiles standing erect and clad as hunters or warriors. Each figure is wonderfully hand tooled and detailed. With the pinback fitted with an old-style, silver C-clasp, this is a splendid example of early Peruvian silver making. Hallmarks: 900 on each side of a tree or leaf makers mark. Dimensions: 1-3/4 tall x 2-3/4 wide. Weight: 19.2 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, aside from a slightly wavy pin stem. |
