¡Es muy grandioso e fabuloso! … J. Sotelo signed jewelry pieces are highly sought after and quite a rarity today. This massive, signed Sotelo clamper bracelet is a masterwork of wearable art and definitely an invaluable find for any serious collector of vintage Mexican silver. One of the designer’s earlier works—most likely dating from the 1940’s—it depicts two opposing figurals of the iconic Aztec Feathered Serpent god, Quetzalcoatl. Boasting remarkable workmanship, here the various parts of the feathered serpents are displayed in fantastic répoussage detail: from the heads with plumed crests, fearsome teeth, and sinuous forked tongues, to snaking, scaled bodies, clawed feet, and twisting tails with feathered tips. And each individual design has been executed in sterling silver and surmounted to a nielloed background. The high-relief repoussé, accompanied by the shaded oxidation within the recesses, superb tool work, and dark contrast of the niello, creates an extraordinary depth and dimensionality that bring the entire motif to life. Hallmarks: J. SOTELO, TAXCO, MEX {circle}, 925 {inside circle}; STERLING. J. Sotelo is featured in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks. Dimensions: 3-5/8” at its tallest point, tapering to 1” at the hinge. Wearable inner circumference measures approximately 6-1/2” . Weight: 67.9 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, including a tight hinge that snaps closed. |
