Rare Victorian Silver Polychrome Enameled Miniature Pin
Singularly sensational ~ Femininity at its finest! … A popular jewelry piece in the 18th and early to mid-19th centuries, the Victorian miniature afforded a wearable likeness of a loved one or of a pretty scene to brighten up austere attire. Usually it was made of silver or gold, with the image created in emaux peints or hand-painted enamels. These pieces boasted such delicate color and detail that they were considered works of art, and today they are highly sought-after collectibles. This silver with gold wash, polychrome enamel pin is a gorgeous example of a Victorian miniature. Circular and deeply concave, to enhance the depth of the refined motif, it depicts a cherub sitting on a branch, playing a flute, with a bird perched on a vine, listening. The splendidly executed emaux peints cherub, flute, and bird display vibrant color palettes of pink, yellow, red, green, blue, white, and black. The branch and leafy vines, as well as a defined border along the rim, are a marvel of finely etched handwork. The pinback is fitted with an old-style C-clasp and extended pin stem, characteristic of these Victorian works.

Hallmarks: Unsigned. Dimensions: 1-1/8” in diameter. Weight: 5.3 grams. Condition: Both legs of the cherub exhibit a small flake in the enamel. However, to the eye this appears as shadowing in the paint by design. Also, some of the gold finish on the rim of the pin has worn away, leaving a silver appearance. Other than that, the piece is in fine vintage condition, eminently wearable and collectible. Book Reference: Warman’s Jewelry by Christie Romero features a similar Victorian miniature on page 37.
