Exquisite details ~ Exacting workmanship …
A native of Zuni, New Mexico, Effie Calavaza specializes in silver-making, lapidary, and snake designs. She began silversmithing in 1956, after learning from her husband, Juan Calavaza. Still making jewelry to this day, Effie’s work is collected throughout the world. This vintage money clip is composed of two exquisite Sleeping Beauty turquoise stones, set in sawtooth silver bezels. Encircling the gems is Effie’s trademark snake motif, also handcrafted in silver and with two turquoise insets for eyes. The clip itself is made of stainless steel for durability. Hallmarks: EFFIE C; ZUNI. Dimensions: 1-7/8” x 3/4”. Weight: 17.6 grams. Condition: Probably dating to the 1960’s or ’70s, the piece is in excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality. Book References: Effie Calavaza is featured in Collectible Silver Jewelry by Fred Rezazadeh, pages 67 and 70, as well as in Hallmarks of the Southwest by Barton Wright, pages 42-43. |
