Circa 1940’s or ’50s …
This wonderful pin was most likely handcrafted by a skilled Navajo silversmith. Depicting a deer, the cleverly constructed figure boasts large, repoussé silver ears that have been surmounted to the head, as well as applied, silver bead eyes with sawtooth bezels, a three-dimensional snout, and delicately posed legs—with nicely detailed hooves—that have been mounted in pairs to the back of the piece. The body of the deer is composed of a vibrant, beautifully mottled, oval turquoise cabochon, set in a high, smooth silver bezel and embellished at one end by a small section of twisted silver rope that represents the deer’s tail. This is just a charming and delightful pin, the perfect accent for a jacket lapel or bag. Hallmarks: As with most early Native American silver, the pin is unmarked. It does test positive for silver. Dimensions: 1-1/8” x 2”. The turquoise gemstone measures 12mm x 10mm. Weight: 6.8 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, including a secure rollover clasp on pinback. |
