Reminiscent of the mid-19th-century enamels by Scholz + Lammel! …
Dating from the 1950’s or early ’60s, this sublime modernist brooch was handcrafted by noted enamellist Jytte Borg of Stockholm, Sweden. It is composed of a deeply concave, abstract bowl-like copper base, upon which has been applied a vibrant, abstract design in vitreous enamel. Produced with a specialized enameling technique, vitreous enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing at very high heat. The glass melts and flows, then hardens into a glassy smooth yet durable design, boasting incredible depth and brilliance of color. This piece displays a radiant palette of opaque cobalt blue, transparent teal, transparent green, and a luminous, transparent red that is not easy to create on copper. Altogether a fabulous work of wearable art, it is a splendid example of the vivid and innovative jewelry that came out of the Scandinavian Modernist movement. Hallmarks: Jytte on back. Dimensions: 1-7/8” x 1-1/8”. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality, including a fully functional hinged pin and old-style C-clasp on the back. |
