“The Spratling of Peru” …
Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico. She is one of today’s hottest collectibles in the field. Distinctly characterized by a semi-circular blade, the tumi was a ceremonial knife used by the Inca and today it is the national symbol of Peru. This splendid pin takes its motif from the pre-Columbian tumi god, but its design and construction demonstrate the modernist panache and signature technique seen so prominently in Laffi’s works. Here, the body of the tumi god is composed of superbly hand cut sterling silver and displays minimalist tooled detail. While the semi-circular headdress, surmounted to the silver figural, has been designed in 18K gold and boasts highly defined chasing. With its slightly convex form and applied gold work, the piece exhibits a wonderful dimensionality and character. It makes for attention-getting wearable art, as well as a distinctive addition to any Graziella Laffi or vintage Peruvian silver collection. Hallmarks: PERU, LAFFI, 925, K18. Dimensions: 1-1/2” tall x 1-1/4” wide. Weight: 8.3 grams. Condition: Dating to the 1950’s, it is in excellent vintage condition, including a secure rollover-locking clasp. |
