Huge RARE 1940s BAKELITE + ROSEWOOD LIZARD Pin Brooch
Resplendent Reptile! … Dating to the 1940’s, this large lizard brooch is composed of rosewood embellished with a laminated section of thick, deep red Bakelite. The Bakelite is superbly hand carved, boasting great detail and dimension, and the lizard is further defined with a fabulous pointed snout, as well as two glass eyes, set into deep, circular recesses in the wood. The dark and beautifully grained rosewood is nicely polished and the secure rollover clasp on the back is embedded in the wood. Expertly handcrafted, this is a fun piece of wearable art and a divine Bakelite collectible for aficionados of early art plastic.

MARKS/MAKER: Unmarked. DIMENSIONS: 4-1/2 x 1-3/4”. CONDITION: A small section of the Bakelite, which would laminate the extended front leg, is missing. However, there are no rough edges along the Bakelite or demarcation on the wood that make the missing piece obvious. The pin is otherwise in very good vintage condition. BOOK REFERENCES: Variations of these rare Bakelite and wood pieces produced during the ’40s can be seen in Karima Parry’s book Bakelite Pins, pages 116-117, and in Leigh Leshner’s Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry, pages 35 and 157, with estimated book values upwards of $325.
